Two people died and 16 more were injured after a collision between four cars and a heavy truck on the road between Groot Aub and Omeya on Saturday evening.
Members of the emergency service of Windhoek and Rehoboth rushed to the scene to assist the injured people. First responders also had to use the Jaws of Life to free people trapped in the wreckage.
It is alleged that one of the cars travelling from the direction of Rehoboth crashed into the back of a bakkie also going in the same direction. The first two cars involved in the accident hardly came to standstill when a third vehicle also on its way to Windhoek slammed into the pile-up.
The driver of the fourth car managed to stop just in time but a truck travelling the direction of Rehoboth also crashed into the first three vehicles and pushed the wreckage at high velocity into the fourth car.
All 16 injured people were transported to hospitals in Windhoek for further medical care.
