Ignatius David, the police officer who was caught on camera stealing money from a passenger at the Hosea Kutako International Airport, was already out on bail in a matter where he stands accused of raping a woman.
The 30-year-old David mad his first appearance in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court on Monday and was denied bail on the charge of theft because of the previous case of rape that is still pending against him.
The accused member of the Namibian Police was caught on closed circuit television camera where he can be observed taking money from the hand bag of a female passenger going through the transit checkpoint.
David and another police officer were not supposed to be at the passenger transit checkpoint and neither were they allowed to search the baggage of female passengers. Both are facing disciplinary charges from the Namibian Police in this regard.
David was formally charged with the theft of 800 Euros from the passenger’s handbag. He also faces charges under Namibia’s anti-corruption laws because he abused his position or office for his own gratification.
David was arrested last December on a charge of rape. He stands accused of raping a woman in the police barracks at the time. He was set free on bail of N$2 000 during a court appearance late last year.
The state prosecutor in the matter of the theft at the airport opposed bail on, amongst others, the ground that the accused is already free on bail on the charge of rape.
Magistrate Johannes Shuuveni postponed the matter to 6 March to allow David time to solicit the services of a legal representative.
