The number of fatal road accidents usually associated with the Festive Season have declined for two consecutive summer holiday seasons.
That means the number of serious and debilitating injuries that people have to live and contend with after the horror of motor vehicle accidents have also declined in number.
Deputy Commissioner Edwin Kanguatjivi, commander of the Namibian Police’s Public Relations Division, said that according to statistics provided to NamPol revealed that only 430 vehicle crashes were recorded during the 2018/19 period while 509 were recorded in the previous festive season, this representing a 16 percent decrease.
Statistics also show that a total number of 770 crash related injuries were recorded during the 2018/19 festive season compared to 945 injuries the previous year.
Fatalities stood at 82 in the 2018/19 festive season compared to 122 that were recorded previously.
During special operations by members of the police and other law enforcement agencies this past festive season, 91 200 drivers were screened with 379 arrests for driving under the influence of an intoxicating substance.
“The Road Safety Project specifically targeted the B1 and B2 roads to prevent and reduce road accidents. Measured against the reduction in numbers, the operation on the two main national roads definitely enhanced road safety and showed positive results,” Kanguatjivi said.
In this regard the Motor Vehicle Accident Fund set aside N$500 000 for a joint road safety campaign for the 2018/19 Festive Season. The MVA strengthened law enforcement interventions through the enhancement of the officers’ capacity by facilitating the calibration of speed and alcohol measuring equipment, as well as acquiring 15 additional alcohol screening devices.
The Fund serves as a social safety net for the preservation of losses of human life and consequent rehabilitation of injured people after the unfortunate involvement in a road crashes.
