Hambia Willem, the driver of a bus carrying more than 50 passengers managed to avert certain disaster by bringing the severely damaged vehicle he was operating to a controlled and safe standstill after crashing into another vehicle that was parked in the middle of the road in the middle of the night. 
The irresponsible actions of the yet unknown driver of a Tata pick-up severely endangered the lives 57 others after he left his vehicle parked on the drive surface of the main road between Otjiwarongo and Okahandja in the middle of the night without any warning or hazard lights.
According to Deputy Commissioner Hophni Hamufungu of the Namibian Police’s Public Relations Division the driver of the bus carrying 52 passengers crashed into the parked vehicle in the dark. The impact of the first crash pushed the stationary vehicle into the lane of oncoming traffic and another vehicle crashed into it for a second time.
“The incident occurred at about 23:40 on Friday evening roughly 20 kilometres south of Otjiwarongo. The bus was travelling in a southerly direction while the second vehicle to crash in to the stationary vehicle, a white BMW, was travelling towards Otjiwarongo. One occupant of the BMW, the nine-year-old Paulus Kasoma sustained serious injuries and he was transported to Katutura Hospital in a critical condition. The 52 occupants of the bus and the four other people in the BMW escaped the potential disaster with only slight injuries.”
According to Deputy Commissioner Hamufungu the driver of the Tata pick-up was nowhere to be found shortly after the crash.
He said the police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.
