A WINDHOEK man who in 2016 assaulted and fatally stabbed a woman he met at a local bar was Wednesday sentenced to an effective 37 years and six months.

The man, who was also sentenced to an additional five years for grievously attacking the deceased’s friend, still has not apologised for his crimes.

The five-year sentence will run concurrently with the sentence on the murder count. Elwen Gawaxab, 39, stood emotionless in the dock as Judge Alfred Siboleka recounted that the defenseless Cathy Gatonye was continuously assaulted, kicked, stabbed and beaten with a stone.

Her chest was sliced open, leaving her internal organs exposed. That same evening, Gawaxab charged at Thalitha Mungunda, who was in the company of Gatonywe.

The women reportedly refused to go to a hotel that Gawaxab offered to pay for to have sexual intercourse with him.

“At the hospital, the deceased had multiple stab wounds in the face, head, breast and abdomen. She did not react to light and she had massive excess watery fluid collecting on the brain tissues. The deceased suffered multiple dislocated skull fractures, especially to her face. The assault and murder of defenseless women and children has uncontrollably gone out of hand and it seems the situation remains unabated,” Judge Siboleka ruled.

Gatonye is survived by her husband and two children. Gawaxab has, however, denied killing Gatonye and said he will appeal his conviction with the help of his lawyer, Mbanga Siyomundji.
